Mr. Meiser presented to the Board highlighting some of the changes this year and some of the activities that are ongoing.
He began by sharing how the staff and administration are addressing the improvement of student reading levels. He explained interventions that were put into place this year and how the ability to evaluate information is valuable to the staff as they determine how best to address each student's needs.
Another one of the topics Mr. Meiser shared with the Board, was the fun activities that have taken place in the building so far this year, such as students and staff participating in the Christmas parade and how much they enjoyed that as well as the dress-up days every day in December and the holiday door contest that took place this year. It has become a fun competition among the students and staff. Another topic Mr. Meiser shared was that there was a new ELA curriculum implemented this year, and they are in the 3rd year of the math curriculum. He stated that the staff asked about the need for more time to accomplish training, preparation, and collaboration - the team was able to shift and make changes to open a 1/2 day for creating lessons and exploring units. The administration is getting positive feedback on this. They are hoping to continue it. Mr. Meiser discussed PBL throughout K-2, how turkey traps for thanksgiving became elf traps at Christmas as the staff continues trying to teach through the projects. He told the Board that Megan Crook received the Dollar General Literacy Grant and that this is the second year in a row she has received it, stating that the funds will be used for classroom libraries. He also shared with the Board that the elementary school received a Reading Is Fundamental Grant. Mr. Meiser's also shared that there were pep rallies held introducing and reinforcing the principles of "REAL Redskins" - in these pep rallies, a specific part of REAL is focused on and students can receive a Spirit Key. The first was given to the 1st grade for bringing in the largest amount of socks they brought. December was canned foods, 5th grade brought in 1000 cans on the last day of the drive and won the Spirit Key. He shared that they are looking at field trips and that the students love the trips to the Planetarium. 1st graders went to the pumpkin patch. 2nd grade is going to the McKinley Museum. At the end of his presentation, Mr. Miser took a moment to thank the Board for all they do.
